Parks and Recreation Month July 2024 Proclamation Photo

We are thrilled to announce the celebration of Parks and Recreation Month throughout July 2024. This annual event, recognized nationwide by the National Recreation and Park Association since 1985, highlights the vital role parks and recreation play in building strong, vibrant, and resilient communities. Our dedicated staff works tirelessly to provide exceptional programs and facilities that enhance our quality of life. Let's come together to celebrate their hard work and the many benefits our services bring to our community.

Presentation by Julie Adams, Director of Parks, Recreation, and Culture as she accepted the Parks and Recreation Month Proclamation from the City Commission:

“Since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association has been celebrating Parks and Recreation Month to promote building strong, vibrant, and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation. It also recognizes the more than 160,000 parks and recreation professionals, plus countless seasonal and part-time staff members and teammates, who help us give back to the communities in which we serve.

“This year's theme is "Where You Belong," highlighting that everyone in our community belongs within our parks, recreation, and culture structures. We offer something for everyone, whether you're young or old, involved or not so involved. Our programs are inclusive, providing essential services for all ages and abilities. They are safe, accessible spaces to build meaningful connections.

“Our recent achievements include the completion of Joyce B. Davis Park, the popular downtown sidewalk cafes, the Rueben Williams Sports Complex, and ongoing projects like the Lake Elbert Trail and Lake Conine Nature Park. We're also expanding our library services, including the addition of a sensory garden and a new branch at the Winter Haven Recreational and Cultural Center.

“Summer camp is in full swing with our "Off the Chain" program, serving 280 children across three locations, with plans to grow in the future. We also celebrate significant community events like the 100th birthday of Miss Annie Davis at the senior center, the public party at the Winter Haven Recreation and Cultural Center, and our successful partnerships with organizations like the American Red Cross and our annual Juneteenth celebration.

“Again, we want to celebrate Parks and Recreation Month and remind everyone that parks, recreation, and culture are places where everyone belongs. We are grateful for the continued support and dedication that drive policies and decisions to make Winter Haven a great place for parks, recreation, and culture.”
